From Training to Treatment: Mastering EMDR Implementation

Presenter: Sherie Hawkins, PhD, LPC, NCC, CPCS

DESCRIPTION: This is a specialized workshop designed for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Licensed Associate Professional Counselors (LAPCs) who have completed EMDR training but feel uncertain about incorporating it into their clinical practice. Many clinicians struggle with bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge of the standard EMDR protocol and their own clinical intuition and skills. This workshop will provide hands-on guidance, practical strategies, and real-world case applications to help therapists confidently integrate EMDR into their sessions. This workshop will empower therapists to move beyond hesitation and confidently implement EMDR in their practice, ensuring they can effectively support their clients in trauma healing.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. **Enhancing Clinician Confidence and Competence:** Using Case Studies and reviewing the EMDR Standard Protocol, Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the eight-phase EMDR protocol and how to adapt it to different client presentations while maintaining fidelity to the model. Participants will have an opportunity to talk through hesitations and fears that inhibit them from implementation.

2. **Bridging Theory and Practice:** Strengthen clinical conceptualization by integrating the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model from the start of the therapeutic relationship. Participants will learn to assess and conceptualize clients' presenting problems through a trauma-informed lens, ensuring EMDR is embedded within the treatment process rather than viewed as a standalone tool.

This objective emphasizes the importance of using EMDR as a comprehensive treatment framework rather than just an intervention technique. Research highlights that EMDR's effectiveness is maximized when therapists conceptualize cases through the AIP model, identifying how past experiences contribute to current symptoms and structuring treatment accordingly

 3. **Assessing Client Readiness for EMDR Processing:** Clinicians will gain greater understanding of the need for assessing client readiness for EMDR Processing. Clinicians will gain tools for assessment including options for Standardized measures as well as client psycho-education regarding what to expect during the EMDR processing (Phase 4) in an effort to create greater client comfort.
